Balthazar Kael
"Impossibility is only determined by ones conviction." -- Ba'al.
Character Name: Balthazar Raghnall Kael
Nickname: Ba'al, Kael, Sicarius
Affiliation: Earth Federation
Position/Rank: Federation Captain, Private Mechanic and inventor.
Squad/Team: None yet.
Race: Terran
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Cybernetic/Bio/Genetic Enhancements:Wide-ranged genetic modification in effort to create a Terran supersoldier to rival both Martians and Spacers. The attempt, by hopes, failed, though the result was a man with, quintessentially, peaked human phisiology. His body was given the strength, speed, endurance, and reflexes to rival a variety of olympic atheletes. His mind-- in a relatively unintended effect-- expanded to a genius level intellect. His skin (over time and physical experimentation...) became more durable and ressiliant. The boons of the experiment resulted several drawbacks, however: Hyperactivity to the point of rarely being able to sleep, the higher grade of excitability and quick-tempered-ness that goes along with it, and a critically increased caloric intake. Where as a normal person might require 1,000-2,000 calories daily, Ba'al requires over double that to function day to day, as he does.
Also possesses a custom made Neural Translation implant, called the Mental Connectivity Drive, sergically installed in his head. Limited projective/wifi capabilties, mostly requires direct link via a port in the base of his skull.
Special Skills/Abilities: Empty-hand and weapon-based melee combat. Pistol and mid-range rifle marksman. A thorough and veritably masterful understanding of AMU technologies. Invention of new technologies.
Appearance: Pic 1, Pic 2. Six foot-three, two hundred and twelve pounds. Short, red hair. Cat'seye green eyes. Dense, very well defined musculature on a slightly muscular, athletic build. Rounded, slightly angled dome. Very angled jaw. Pointed chin. No facial or discernable bodily hair of any kind. Smooth, slightly tanned complexion. Scars literally everywhere. Various degrees of size, intensity, age, and wear.
Typically can be seen wearing a black, skin tight, muscle shirt made out of a carbon composite material. Black pants of the same material are only slightly less fitting. Black gloves. White and black boots... You get the picture. Entire outfit is the retracted version of a vacuum suit, sans helmet. When needed, at the push of a button or neural command, the pants ankles seal around the boots, and sleaves extend downward from the shoulders and seal on the inside of the collar of the gloves. A small white pack on the back of the shirt houses the power unit, compressed air supply, and small kinetic shield generator for the suit.
Any other clothing worn tends to be affixed over the suit; Primarily a belt holster, shoulder mounted sword sheathe, and a large, tan cloak. The helmet to the suit is never too far away, either.
Bio: An unknown father. A working mother. Ba'al was raised outside an Earth Federation military base where his mother worked as a secretary. An ordinary life on a livable salary for several years. At seven years, an explosion in the AMU repair dock killed more than a dozen people, Ba'al's mother included. The only next of kin, several soldiers and one mid-grade officer invaded the tiny red headed child's life. "What do we do with the kid?" one soldier asked as they poured through the apartment, repossessing anything that might have had relevance to the woman's job.
"Throw him in the genetic program. They're always looking for new subjects."
His life flipped, turned, upside-down, Ba'al spent the next many years undergoing numerous injections, examinations, and physical aptitude tests. He never knew why or what was going on. Given a rudamentary education, all he knew was that the bastards in the white coats were trying to make all of the kids stronger for some reason. For years this went on. He grew. He grew strong. Fast. ...And intelligent. The scientists had grown complacent with the security of the children and tended to endulge them quite a bit. Particularly Ba'al, who seemed to have been advancing faster than the other children. With a suddenly expanded intellect, the elementary things in the endless white rooms werent enough. So, Balthazar asked for information. Library access. Things of that sort. The more he learned, the more he found himself capable of. Soon enough, he managed to hack into the military mainframe through the networked terminals in the library. He found out what they were doing and why.... They were trying to make the perfect soldier. One that could rival the resiliant artians and the skilled pilots from the mysterious 100 worlds. They'd tried it on adults, but the retrovirus just wasn't capable of completely rewriting their phisiology. Younger targets were needed. Ones still in development. In doing so, a child's natural development would amplify the effects of the genetic recoding. Or so was the theory.... In Balthazar and a few of the other kids-- who were all around fourteen, now-- it seemed to have been correct.
As Ba'al began to plot his escape and revenge, the CEO and nearly sole owner of a Luna-based Construction Contractor that produced all manner of technologies for various buyers paid a visit to the genetics ward. Curious, the man looked into the names of the various children he saw through a pane of thick security glass. One rather athletic looking red-head had stared at him just a little too hard for comf-.... Kael. That had been the name of a woman he had been in a serious relationship with more than a decade ago. Could it be? A closer look at the adolescent.... Those eyes. Both the contractor and the boy had those vibrant green eyes.
"...Fuck."
Further digging and some fighting-- demanding that Balthazar be released to his custody-- later, and Ba'al formally met his father for the first time. "Bullshit...." Was his only response. He didn't have a father. Time passed, however, and Ba'al came to accept the truth. Modification aside, his DNA matched the contractors. If nothing else, though, the young man saw this as an opportunity to gain the resources he needed to get his revenge on the people that had imprisoned him for most of his life after his mother was so vaguely 'killed'. Another few years passed before Balthazar had a revelation. "You know what? Put me back."
"...What?"
"Put me back in the genetics program. If I'm already this advanced over other humans, then they may as well finish what they started." His father relucantly agreed. Rejoining the research program as a military recruit, Ba'al continued to grow in all aspects of himself, including developing a critical intellectual hyper-activity and ludicrously large appetite. He advanced through the basic ranks of the military and even began enacting designs for various weaponry that he'd be able to use once he was in a position of relative freedom within the Federation. In no time flat, the young man's advanced mind came to a monstrous epiphany: The mechanical monstrosities that the military used-- himself included-- were horrifically inefficient. The typical piloting system was so flawed and undetailed as to waste more than half of their potential mobility in open combat.
In short order, Ba'al had forgotten his revenge, and had begun designing, and redesigning, and reimagining, and redesigning, and building, and redesigning, and rebuilding the perfect AMU. Or, well... The perfect control system. Using his father's company and money as a platform whenever he wasn't called to military duty, Ba'al invented several new systems for AMUs which would revolutionize the way man controlled machine. New systems which he meticulously guarded by using only non-networked computers and hard copy blueprints locked in a vault with a puzzle based lock that only one with the improved intellect the red-head possessed could even begin to figure out. Such to the point that he, after requisitioning custom made parts from the Aether Productions Company, would literally construct entire AMU's by hand, wrench, and crane. Dozens of units he created in secret as he piloted the typical garbage production Gespenst units in various military situations right up until he was promoted to Captain.
Shortly thereafter, Ba'al applied for an extended leave while he finalized his project. Having already been implanted with a neural interface system of his own design called the Mental Connectivity Drive, Ba'al scrapped the NTSU-0041 in the blueprints phase, then wrote out the designs for the 0042 in a three day session of continual work in his secure garage in what used to be Ireland. Considering how little he ate, he was amazed, by the time he finished the specs, that he hadn't yet died. Putting the completed 0040 unit into indefinite storage, Ba'al slept a normal sleep for the first time in years, his dreams giddy with elated anticipation for what he was about to create. Using several premade parts from 0040 as well as putting a speed order for several thousand newly made parts into his father, Ba'al remained awake for another two days while he constructed as much of his new AMU as he could. A few scant hours of sleep thereafter, and it was a game of unfathomable impatience vs an unyielding clock as the Captain broke out his stockpile of high calorie foods, cranked up the gravity in his shop, and trained for two weeks straight while he waited for his father to send the parts he needed down from the moon.
Another week, and Ba'al's masterpiece was completed... The NTSU-0042 Beta... 'Sicarius'. Simulations. Tests. And finally, a run.
The system was amazing. The Neuro-Trace System was perfect. The compatability and synchronisity over the 0040 had improved one hundred and twenty percent. No longer did he feel any lag between his mind and his mech. What he thought, it did. The Sicarius was as his body.... He was ready to unveil it.
Personality: Hyper. If there was one word to sum Ba'al up, it would be hyper. Hyper-active, Hyper-intelligent, Hyper-aggressive. Et cetera, et cetera, so on, so forth. Due to the genetic reconstitution he recieved throughout his life, Balthazar has evolved into a veritably bi-polar young man. He can go from excited and happy to enraged to depressed in seconds. While he's managed to calm down and even out over the years through physical training and discipline, these issues are still a very dominant part of his personality. The rest of it mostly consists of a sarcastic, somewhat friendly guy who has way too much going on in his head at any given time. Whether he'll suddenly come to a revelation about a problem that has been gnawing at him or simple questioning of the fabric of the universe itself, Ba'al's brain almost never shuts off.
This, of course, results in him almost never actually sleeping. Which, in turn, results in agitation and all that hyper-aggressive bit mentioned above. The only way to alleviate these issues are to immerse himself so completely in some mindless task that he is able to reach a state of mental peace. Whether physical training, meditation, or doing manual labor in the repair of technology. Though, sometimes, that last only makes things worse as his brain works doubly hard to think not only on the aforementioned issues, but at the task at hand, aswell. Several times, in fact, the unending assault of his own mind has resulted in him neglecting food for several hours-- a dangerous prospect with his high caloric requirements-- and him passing out from hunger.
When it comes to interpersonal relations, Ba'al's racing mind tends to put him on a level of absentmindedness that makes him seem rude and aloof. However, if he manages to stop thinking for a few minutes or if otherwise appropriately engaged by another person and their intellect, he can be quite friendly. Joking, laughing, arguing. While he's never had any particularly close friends, should he acquire some, he would be there for them when it counted. While he might be a general flake due to distractions of the thousands of ideas that race through his mind daily, when really needed, he would be able to iron himself down long enough to aid in whatever way possible.
Much the same goes for being in battle. In the seriousness of a military combat situation, Ba'al is able to suppress the racing of his mind and focus on the task at hand.
Important Possessions: A carbonized, titanium alloy katana. Personal V.I. computer utilizing the "MCD" N.I. system which can call the Sicarius to location under extremely basic, autmated DIG control. Miniature "Mech Buster" Pistol; .75 calibur, 10 round magazine.
AMU or Carrier Profile
NTSU-0042B
"[Sicarius is] The single most detailed and responsive melee unit ever created." -- Ba'al
NTSU-0042B
"[Sicarius is] The single most detailed and responsive melee unit ever created." -- Ba'al
AMU or Carrier Name: Sicarius
Size: Light
Class: Melee/Ranged
Environmental Specialty/Exclusivity: Ground Specialty. Works well enough in both space and air, but because it then relies on thrusters, rather than physical movement, its specfic motility, when not on the ground, becomes significantly less useful. When it comes to sea, while the Sicarius can function underwater, the critical reduction in all mobilities makes it extremely sluggish and nearly useless despite its technological superiority over other command systems.
Offensive Tech/Weaponry: -Sicarius Blade. A massive, kinetic melee katana made of a forged alloy of Titanium carbide. Don't let it's appearance fool you, however... Via direct feed through contacts in the hilt to the hand, the blade Opens, and charges with a honed and directed Solid State Energy blade. A weapon of Ba'als invention as a tool of versatility. Repeated activation and deactivation of the blade can greatly aid in penetration of various armor platings. Due to the nature of the direct feed, no AMU without a duplicate direct feed system can utilize the weapon to its potential.
-Vibro-edge titanium combat knife. With a photon cell battery mounted directly into the handle, this titanium blade can be used to pierce into a unit's systems to deal critical damage to the power supply to its various areas. Charge is only good for around two uses, however. Ba'al carries one replacement battery, but he still must take care as to when he uses this weapon.
-Standard head mounted Vulcan chainguns. Two straight forward guns mounted into the relative temple area of the head.
-"Mech-Buster" Pistol. Another invention of Ba'al's, this massive handgun fires 203mm shells out of a ten round, handle-fed magazine. While it was created for the use of a special, all-in-one miracle bullet that Ba'al has yet to devise, this beast of a weapon fires a wide variety of munitions, all designed by Balthazar, and all produced by his father's factory. From straight forward, depleted uranium solid shell bullets to containment and discharge rounds and even the exceedingly rare antimatter rounds, this gun uses a solid shell propulsion system combined with a gauss-accelerator augment that draws from the same direct feed system as the Sicarius Blade with the exception that it stores enough energy for two shots without being hooked up. With properly designed bullets, this gun's versatility is practically endless, even if it's ammunition does tend to be rather limited. The Sicarius' thighs each contain 5 spare clips of miscellaneous munitions for a grand maximum total of 111 rounds (including the pre-loaded clip and one round in the chamber). Some munitions, however-- specifically antimatter rounds--, require more room in the clip for containment purposes, and so carry less ammo per magazine.
Defensive Tech: -Carbonized Titanium armor with a thin composite shell mounted on each individual plate. Beam coating adhered to the composite shells.
-Two localized Beam Shields mounted into the palms of Sicarius' hands. When activated, they cover an area three times the size of sicarius hand. Used to 'catch' melee attacks and ranged rounds.
-Minor heat sinks that slightly reduce energy signature. Small scale effect combined with pilot resilliance make continual use possible.
-Thermal-lock countermeasure flares. One hundred count. 50 mounted into the front and top of each shoulder. Takes several flares to ensure distraction.
Other Tech: -"MCD" Mental Connectivity Drive. Part one of Ba'al's masterpiece invention. The Mental Connectivity Drive is a bio-mechanical (or moreover, bio-digital) implant in the user's head which acts as a Neural Interface system that gives the human brain direct control over any electronic hardware plugged into it. Likewise, said electronic and/or digital equipment can give feedback to the brain, essentially turning the mind into a super computer and master control system.
-"NTS" Neuro-Trace Control System. Part two. The Neuro-Trace System utilizes the MCD to give a pilot direct control over a piece of hardware by sending the electric signals of the motor cortex into the control system of the hardware. In the case of an AMU, the pilot's physical bodily control shuts down inside the cockpit-- leaving only involuntary muscular control--, and his mind is veritably inserted into the mech via the mech's feedback into the MCD system. The pilot, as literally as possible, becomes the unit. Once used to the system and the extra functions of the pilot's new 'body', control response is as instantaneous as brain to the arms and legs. This gives the pilot an otherwise impossible degree of control over the fine motor functions of his unit. If the AMU had toes, the pilot would be able to wiggle them. The downside to this system, however, is that not only does the brain interpret and then translate the physical action of the mech as physical strain on the body-- working and conditioning it harshly, despite the actual physical activity--, but the pilot can easily develop a sort of phantom limb syndrome when not piloting the NTS controlled AMU. The extra functions such as optical zoom, visual filters, computer analysis, integral weaponry, and various storage compartents can leave the pilot feeling... incomplete in his own skin. It takes a special kind of person to be able to maintain his sanity in such condition.
-MCD assisted V.I. computer system with full terrain/combat analytical and targeting functions. Both visual analysis and radar based.
-4x Optical zoom, Night vision, and Thermal Optic filters.
-Mid-range, high detail RADAR with Smart Radar tagging.
-Diagnostic Scan capabilities.
-Basic ECCM functionality.
-Internal inertial dampeners.
-Modified fusion generator. Overclocking enabled.
-Eight modified small Plasma thrusters located on both heels, both calves, lower back, and back of shoulders. One large plasma thruster located dead center of back. Total system capable of sustained flight and aerial combat at lower velocities. All modifications designed to allow critical overclocking for tremendous forward thrust at escape velocity. Even casual use of overclocked thrust can cause damage to the thrusters. Full out use would be capable of launching Sicarius into low orbit, but would require complete replacement of all thrusters.... And probably overwhelm all life support functions.
-Two dual-cycle hydrogen thrusters mounted into the forearms. Used to boost melee damage or, at times, further add to the massive overclock boost.
Appearance: Standing at fifty-seven feet tall, Sicarius quite literally looks like a giant human being in a suit of armor. Primarily black and gold in coloration, it has glowing red eyes and corrugated plates of armor in a japanese styling. It carries its massive katana either on its back or left hip with its right hip occupied by a dual holster for both the Mech Buster pistol and vibro-combat knife. The relatively small cockpit is devoid of all feature and light. There is literally a comfortable chair, pneumatic, cushioned restraints, and a plug. While there is enough room for one small person to squeeze in around the restraint system once the pilot is locked into the NTS, once the door on the chest of of Sicarius is closed, it would be completely dark and uncomfortable inside. In terms of its internal mechanics, the unit is specifically designed to mimic the motions of the human body as closely as physically possible. Each joint moves in a manner identical to that of a person. Every motive control of every limb, like the tendons and muscles of the pilot.
Style: Fully utilizing Ba'al's NTS system, the Sicarius literally moves like a critically enhanced human being. As such, it also fights like one. Using martial arts and direct hand to hand combat with a profficiency that surpasses all but other NI control systems-- and possibly even those, considering that the Spacer units designed with the system are used to fighting in space, not on the ground--, the Sicarius is basically the ultimate direct melee fighter. Fast and respectably armored, the unit fights as Balthazar does; quick and deadly, using its katana and pistol at close range to make short work of the critical areas of enemy units.
Modules: -Custom made, Micro-pulse driven orbital launch pack. Basically a giant jetpack that can launch Sicarius into space with no detriment to its own thrusters or energy output.
-"Stealth configuration". A swap out of all external plates with a variety of stealth pigment layouts. Eye units change to a pale blue while using this alteration.
-Beam Vulcans. Depending on the situation at hand, the standard chain vulcan guns may not cut it. The units can be replaced with standard beam vulcans instead.
-"Beam Barrel". A secondary Mechbuster pistol that fires slightly larger scale, semi-automatic beam weaponry to standard beam assault rifles. Fed by rechargeable plasma photon cells as 'magazines'. Can be hooked into any powersource for a direct feed for increased power and/or overcharge shot. Rarely if ever used in conjunction with the primary Mech Buster.
Manufacturer: Designed and assembled by Ba'al himself, with the parts production contracted to his father's Lunar construction corporation.
